R FOR RICHARD MARX – A TO Z CHALLENGE

R FOR RICHARD MARX

Richard Marx is among the few who is synonymous with power ballads, hard rock, pop rock, alt rock, writer, singer and composer.

R

Although the most successful number includes Right here waiting but the earlier songs which were more inclined towards rock are a class apart and show an altogether different aspect of Richard. These songs includes

  • Heart on the line
  • Don’t mean nothing
  • Hazard
  • Too late to say goodbye
  • Satisfied

The other hits and soft ones are Right here waiting, At the beginning with Donna Lewis from Anastasia, old on to the nights and Angelia.

My Connect

There was a track from him in one of his compilation which prompted me to listen further.

My Pick

Q FOR QUEEN – A TO Z CHALLENGE

Q FOR QUEEN

This Queen is the King of Rock, they are an English rock band and dominated the rock charts in the 80’s. The lead vocalist was the evergreen Freddie Mercury & Roger Taylor also the drummer who created the on screen magic

They created a cliché by their music in hard rock.

It must have been some divine powers which were unto them while they created the legendary Bohemian Rhapsody, no song from today’s genre can even stand near it.

Another one bites the dust a song which is so loved to be played during matches.  Other songs includes We will we will rock you, then there’s The show must go on

My Connect

Another one bites the dust was the one I heard on a TV show long time back.

My Pick

Bohemian Rhapsody will always be my pick.

P FOR PINK FLOYD – A TO Z CHALLENGE

P FOR PINK FLOYD

There are only 3 walls which are famous, Berlin wall, Wall of China and The Wall by Pink Floyd.

PAnother Brick in the Wall was the song which hit number 1 instantly. It still continues to reign it’s position and I can listen to it any time, any place and any duration, love it at times when I am driving, it arouses something within.

Another Brick in the Wall all versions (Reminiscing, Education & Drugs) were written by Roger Waters

The wall was an imagination of the wall which was created in the singer’s mind and another brik in the wall would mean that the cause, effect, situation or person just added to the wall and thereby increasing the isolation of the person from society, or relationship etc.

David Gilmour and Roger Waters love you and respect for your music.

My Connect

I still remember when I bought the album The Wall in a fluke, was so impressed with the cover, title and the band’s name. I was at high school during that time probably.

My Pick

Listen to any wall version:

O FOR OM MANI PADME HUM – A TO Z CHALLENGE

O FOR OM MANI PADME HUM

om mani padme hum,om mani padme hum,

om mani padme hum,om mani padme hum.

O

There is a reason behind the repetitions, if you have heard this song you can relate to it. The chant goes in my head as I am typing or even thinking about this song.

This is a very powerful and peaceful Buddhist song, if you ever had the chance of visiting any monastery you will find it written there. It is related to Buddhism and is a very calming mantra for meditation and when you are alone and need some tranquility and peace just play this song in low volume and you will experience magic.

 My Connect

Again youtube suggestion lead me here, the guys in google certainly derserve an applause

My Pick

There are various versions of the mantra, however sharing the one which I find the best and soothing:

N FOR NIRVANA, KURT COBIAN – A TO Z CHALLENGE

N FOR NIRVANA

NIRVANA means to rise above and attain the moksha (release, freedom from cycle of birth and death and attain a state of egolessness) It is a state very hard to attain and is difficult to preach or practice.

N

The Nirvana band however does very well and helps you to attain Nirvana through their music. The songs in their list includes, Smells like teen spirit, About a girl, Sliver, Stay Away to name a few. The band’s lifeline was cut short following the death of Kurt Cobian which was very unfortunate for them.

Sliver is one of the songs which my small one uses and says to me in a pun Grandma take me home, wanna be alone.

Love you Kurt Cobian for giving us the best grunge,is  there some reason behind so many good musicians dying young, makes me feel sad and bad about it. Anyway the music will always make him live forever. May God give him peace wherever he is.

My Connect

I heard Come as you are in one of a CD compilation and thereafter I went on to chase the other songs:

My Pick

Come as you are is one of my favourite, unparalled opening guitar:

Request you to listen the song and read the first comment, I couldn’t resist laughing, very witty people out there with great pun indeed, must check

M FOR MOON WALK AKA MICHAEL JACKSON – A TO Z CHALLENGE

M FOR MOON WALK WHO ELSE THAN OUR MICHAEL JACKSON

When it comes to music how we can forget Michael Jackson. He is the man who gave you the moon walk and still it is one of the best dance steps in the world. He is after all the KING of POP without any doubts.

I have always felt sad about his demise and just imagine what it would have been if he was still between us. Some of his best songs include Beat it, Thriller, black or white, Remember the time. One of his last track which I like very much is They don’t care about it, it was ecstatic

Salute and respect for the king of pop and May he gets peace wherever he is.

My Connect

Michael is to Music what water is to life so it is not possible that someone is not exposed to MJ. It is so inherent and prevalent that you don’t remember when was your first time.

My Pick

Just beat it, one of my favorites

Also I like the thriller version played in 13 going on 30, you can find Hulk shaking some legs here, do check it out

L FOR LADY GAGA – A TO Z CHALLENGE

L for Lady Gaga

L

She definitely deserves a mention and applause. She is bold, different, good at her music and successful. She is always on the news for some reason and is known for her wild outfits in her video and fashion sense.

Alejandro, Bad Romance and Poker Face are the biggest hits she has on her list.

When Gaga and her friends met in their initial days they were working on for a name. They used to sing Radio Gaga whenever she used to come and one fine day she received a text which read Lady Gaga, it was from there she adopted the name and it lead her to success.

My Connect

There is a strange story as to how I heard Lady Gaga.

It was summer, it was in England, it was Berkshire county and I was in Reading – guess what – The Reading Music festival was on. The place where I lived was near the site at Oracle Square and I can hear the distant music and the area which brightened up the sky.

The place got full with the youth and the place went mad and viral, they played songs whole night and Alejandro, Bad Romance  and Poker Face was a hit those days, it was the first time that I hear Lady Gaga.

Thereafter I saw the video from youtube and also heard the songs in Thames Valley Radio show,  Heart Breakfast with Matt and Mitchell, by far it is the best morning breakfast show I have heard. Loved to hear Matt and Michell.

On my return to India, I used the name and video very well. My daughter was got scared of Lady Gaga and I used to tell her to sleep before Lady Gaga arrives 🙂

K FOR KAUSHIKI CHAKRABORTY & KENNY ROGERS – A TO Z CHALLENGE

Kaushiki Chakraborty

She is the living Goddess Saraswati on earth. Goddess Saraswati is regarded as the Indian goddess for knowledge, arts music and wisdom and is the epitome of knowledge and music. When someone has a good voice then he/she is said to have the voice of Maa Saraswati.  At the same time she is regarded humbly beautiful. Comparing Kaushiki Chakraborty to the goddess is no surprise as time and often she has been referred to as Maa Saraswati. She not only has a golden voice and a great command over classical, she is equally beautiful and humble.

KaushikiDi
The gorgeous “Kaushiki Chakraborty”

Kaushiki Chakraborty is the daughter of renowned Indian classical vocalist and composer Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty of Patiala Gharana. Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty is regarded as a legend of the classical arena and received almost all highest award of country (Padma Shri) and state. It was under his guidance and leadership that Kaushiki Chakraborty started her career when she had shown interest in music at the tender age of 2.

Kaushiki Chakraborty started learning Indian classical music and vocal from a very early stage of her life. Belonging to a family of musicians gave her a platform to start. She started training under Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty’s her father and mentor’s guidance and at the same time she imbibed great moral values from him too. He was a not only a great singer and musician but has very strong moral values which Kaushiki picked up.

In one of the videos here he is seen teaching her daughter Kaushiki as he talks about:

  •  How we need to understand what the kids want,
  • They are super-fast learners and
  • We should not super impose anything on them; rather try to tap the potential in which they are strong.

She would always start her performance with the words “Please pardon me if I make any mistake” despite scaling the Everest of Indian classical arena. It is very difficult to perform Indian classical vocal and it take years of patience and practice, even then people make mistakes.

I was longing to meet and attend her live show since long; even send her a tweet at the beginning of this year, to which she responded. I was fortunate to attend her concert on 03rd April 2016

I was stunned with her humbleness as she gave so much of time to her fans, she fulfilled almost request of all sorts, be it autographs or selfie, she is so calm and composed which is inspiring in itself. That’s how you become a great person in life. She gave autograph to my daughter who also enjoys her music and spoke to us too.

She has a strong fan following in Europe and US and all shows are packed round the year.

My Connect

Thanks to technology and google, Whilst listening to a song in you tube the suggestions came up with recommendations to the same song sung by Kaushi Chakraborty. Thereafter there was no looking back and the song was Lagi Lagaan Pati Sakhi Sang, Raag Hansdhwani

My Pick

It is very difficult to pick one song from her collection, sharing a concert held at Oranjerie Theater in Roermond, The Netherlands:

K FOR KENNY ROGERS

K for Kenny Rogers is another country music artist and is best known for his single The Gambler which won him the Grammy Awards.

The Gambler was written by Don Schlitz and after a few rejections it was sung by a few which did not get clicked. Later Johnny Cash also picked it up but it was the version of Kenny Rogers which created the magic of The Gambler and it is still one of the best songs which come to mind when you think of country music, trains, gambling, cards and drinks. Amazing song, amazing guitar, amazing voice powered with the best lyrics – it was the golden time when this got composed.

My Connect

I heard the Gambler on radio while I was returning from work; it was strong enough to make me search the song on internet and kept listening to it for a few days.

My Pick

The best song which I like is The Gambler, enjoy it here:

Hello, I’m Johnny Cash – A TO Z CHALLENGE

 “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash”

This had been the first line Johnny Cash would say to start all his concerts despite all the name and fame. Johnny Cash needs no introduction and was best known for his country side and gospel songs besides rock n roll. He is one of the most successful and admired music artists of his era and still he continues to be. Johnny Cash had his own style of singing and had a very different voice. I personally admire him a lot as his life was full of ups and downs.

J

His pairing with June Carter, his wife saw some of the best songs to be produced in history, like Ring of Fire. They had a great chemistry on and off the stage.

Walk the line is probably one of the finest songs of Johnny Cash.

My Connect

I never had heard about Johnny Cash until I was in England. When I was back in my home, I used to watch the free to air channels, probably Channel4 and one fine day it was airing Walk the Line, a movie which was a namesake for one of his songs. I was fortunate to watch the lengthy movie from start to end. It was a biopic on the life of Johnny Cash.

The movie though a little long was very well directed as it unfolds Johnny Cash’s story from his younger days till the end, covering the minutest events of his life. It also had included many songs from Johnny Cash, so if you want to witness history of this legend then it is a must watch. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon have portrayed the roles of Johnny Cash and June Carter and they have done justice to it.

My Pick

It is difficult to choose the songs from country music, my pick would be Walk the Line – When you are mine I walk the Line:

This a bonus one- FOR J

J FOR  Janie , Don’t You Take Your Love To Town.

Yes it’s for Jon Bon Jovi, JBJ is one my favourite rock bands which I started to follow early in the list, in the 90’s loved to listen their songs.

I particularly play this song for my wife as she is also named Julian, Janie, so whenever she is off to her Mommas I play it loud (though sometimes I am happy inside 🙂 freedom you see).

Then there is In these arms, Someday I will be Saturday night,

My Connect

Cross Roads was the album, the best of JBJ, this was had been my starting point, the last one I knew was Destination Anywhere album. It had a great track, Tell Me It Was Just a Dream, August 7, 4:15 dedicated to the mysterious disappearance of Katherine Korzilius, daughter of JBJ tour manager.

My Pick

The pick of the band from my side is, Runaway, it is said that daughters grow faster, and as I see my daughter growing up at great pace and acquiring wisdom I would tell her Mom

Ooh, she’s a little runaway, Daddy’s girl learned fast
All those things he couldn’t say.
Ooh, she’s a little runaway.
