Ever wondered why Shanti is chanted thrice in our mantras or rituals?
Om! Shanti, Shanti, Shanti

Yes, you have heard it right and heard it many times – so the question is why do we chant Shanti thrice after the mantras or rituals or Puja at religious places or even at our home.
Let’s take a deep dive and understand the underlying concepts.
Shanti signifies\means peace and we chant Shanti 3 times aiming to bring tranquility and eliminate hindrances across the three dimensions around us:
- Peace to the material world
To bring peace in the material or Bhautika space, it consists of bringing peace to the obstacles coming from the external world, including wild animals, people, and natural calamities. - The Divine or Daivika
To bring peace to The Divine or Daivika – i.e. to pacify obstacles coming from the extra-sensory world of spirits, ghosts, and even deities. - The Internal or Adhyaatmika
To bring peace to The Internal or Adhyaatmika – to pacify the obstacles arising out from one’s own physical self like pain, suffering, and happiness.
These three dimensions collectively constitute the “Tapa-Traya” The three categories of obstacles.
Reciting shanti mantras is believed to pacify obstacles within these realms, fostering a sense of peace and harmony.
